Will OBAMA Destroy Your Online Business?

Politics & Profit

The U.S. Election captured the attention of people across the globe, sparking intense emotion and debate.

Strong arguments on both sides claimed disaster in the economy should one opponent win.

Fear and uncertainty on our future plagued the news airwaves.

When I heard the result of the election I sat in a room with 10 other entrepreneurs, and the net worth in that room was well in excess of $100 million.

I was one of the small guys soaking up incredible information.

As we excitedly plowed through incredibly revealing discussions on media buys, affiliate marketing, sales funnels, branding and more, the successful entrepreneur to the right of me received a text message…

Obama won the election” interrupted Trent.

The eyes in the room looked over for a second…

Each person took about 1 second to process that information…

Not one person made a single comment, not a sigh of relief, nor a subdued grunt.

For that single second there was no emotion, not a slither of curiosity.

Nobody in that room had any emotional attachment to who won the election.

The conversation continued right where it left off…

The topic of the election never propped up again.

It’s not that the result didn’t effect each and every one of us in some way.

It wasn’t that we were too engrossed in the astounding revelations and shocking stories of the talented entrepreneurs in the room.

It was something else…

Here’s why our reaction was emotionless…

We all had our favorite candidates and political ideologies.

Deep down we all shared a passionate viewpoint on how a country should be run, and how the world could be made better.

But we ultimately had no control over who won the election…

Instead we all shared an unspoken knowledge that our biggest influence was from our own actions, not from our reactions to something we each had a tiny negligible effect on.

How does Obama effect you?

70% of the people in that room built themselves up from nothing.

Each with inspiring stories of leaving poverty, hated jobs and incredible loss behind them.

My story of starting my business on unemployment checks and instant noodles looked easy in comparison.

The reality is the government will enforce many things on you, good or bad, which are ultimately outside your control.

But we can all push forward, learn more, and drive to success.

Whether you want to quit your job, make an extra $300/day, outsource your business, or just impact the world in your own way, you can make it happen.

I am incredibly pumped to continue to share my experiences and discoveries in starting an online business, and growing passive profits on the internet.

    Totally agree. Thanks Chris.
No matter who is in the top job, what you do and where you go it by your own hand.

If the other guy had won – each person would still need to carve out their future.

My biggest qstn from this post… How can I get in that room with you guys 🙂

    Cheers.

  • True that Mr. Munch. So many people in the world do not understand the true value of standing up for themselves and creating true value in the world.

I just talked about the importance of entrepreneurs creating jobs recently.

Thank you for bringing up the freedom to take action in whatever way that means for us.

  • TheCrucible says:

Spot on! I just posted a similar comment on Facebook in the middle of a nasty “left vs. right” war with 75 comments. It doesn’t f–cking matter which won! Get off the couch and take action! In 4 years the lazy “poor me” crowd will complain about the next president. Vote for yourself!

  • James says:

If you are a self starter and doer then all the political stuff will not matter. Yes you can care but it will not matter who is the president. You will still pursue the dream of internet marketing no matter what. While fun and engaging to watch all the talking heads on television don’t put money in your bank account and food on your table. If you live to wait to see what benefits the government will give you, then you will be barely be existing on just the very minimal.

  • Laurie says:

Actually, it bothered me to see the polarized ideological reactions. First of all if you are in business the eye should be on the body that regulates commerce: congress. Unless you are in manufacturing or import/export the president’s role in commerce is quite limited.

But hey I’m just a political analyst turned business woman 🙂 As I tell my clients, you can blame your mom, you can blame your dad, you blame the government till the cows come home, it won’t change a darned thing. You have to act if you want change. And taxes? Cost of doing business, that’s why your reserve out funds.

    • stefan says:

      Laurie

Your words of wisdom are an encouragement to the natural freedom of the individual as it should be..
Obama just like all the other purported leaders are puppets of the system.. leadership as people know it is only a fiction of freedom.
it would not matter if a chimpanzee took control the outcome would still be the same..
greed and political agenda.. are controlled wholley by the banking systems of the world.. and whoever dared to change the corrupt system have all been ridiculed beyond redemption.. or assasinated.
A free world without Government.. ( leeches ) and with social control from people who have not been tainted with debt money.. and greed would be the only solution.. And would be a true foundation of world peace.. and cultural understanding.. ok I will get off my soap box now.. peace to all..Stefan

    • Mary-Ellen says:

Well said Laurie. It’s too easy to blame someone else, especially the POTUS for where we are because we don’t want to face that we have control over our lives.

And just a quick comment about taxes, people want a Macy’s country on Walmart prices!

Let’s all roll up our sleeves and make some money so we can pay our fair share and show everyone how it is done!

      • Ed says:

        Great quote and attitude 😉

    • Keith Richard says:

The comments of blame are steeped in emotional sentiment. The problem as a political analyst is the facts you sport as true are intensely misguided or plainly false. This president has initiated a system of czars that oversee and manage duly elected officials and the departments of Government they were appointed to run. He has single handedly executed policy regarding trade, treaties, and commerce across the board that both go against any known understanding of the balance of powers and the separation of authority the different branches of Government are supposed to have, that are described in the Constitution. His czars call the shots on divisions of the gov’t like the EPA which has operated outside it’s charter on tons of commerce related regulations that have circumvented congress 100%. Now if you believe the news media then you are programmed with manipulated information at best and lies and deceptions as a matter of routine. The president started his political agenda by closing the door on all legislative meetings, debates and hearings related to the health care bill. The republican party was effectively shut out. This was unprecedented. No president has ever handled legislative process like this. Then without full support of his own party had to use obscure tactics set aside for completely different reasons to get the bill passed. I could go on but please keep the conversation real. Keith

      • Charlie says:

        Yawn…

They all have done similar things, or worse…in the past.
        Then, what do we do?
As entrepreneurs, we build, and make fungolas, and do some good as empowered people instead
of sinking into bitterness because of our undue attachment to one ideology or the other.

As we speak, under O, more millionaires are still made than in times past. Kapisch? 🙂

  • Tim says:

This will make it harder for all of us to earn the money we want to, or otherwise would have. Obama has a tendency to regulate business to a point where it is harder for them to make a living. I have seen more than one person close their business because regulations make it too difficult to operate at a profit. And as the USA is a major influence in the economy of the world at large, that will affect all of us to some extent.

Tuesday was a sad day in history and we will be paying for it for many years to come. I just hope that the country can survive. I came here nearly 50 years ago from a socialistic country, and it seems like that countryt came back to me.

    • admin says:

So what are you going to do about it? That’s the important thing, and the point of this post.

  • iFaith says:

I have mixed feelings about this… At one side, I agree that it really doesn’t matter who won the election. On the other hand, who won becomes an issue when the government starts to tighten its leash on regulations and start tax increases on all types of businesses – online and offline.

With Obama’s “you didn’t build that” …. one wonders what the next four years will turn out.

Yes… our control and ultimate destiny is in our hands, but it certainly becomes harder when the government and its agencies makes it harder to do business and to expand on our business at that.

Bottom line… I will be optimistic and just deal with what comes in the best way possible. It is useless to spend time worrying… but simply to be ready to be proactive and do our best.

    • I’m in the same boat.

      Concerned? Yes.

Looking to see if there is anything I can do (which there is) to make/keep this country the land of LIBERTY? Absolutely.

But the important thing is that we keep moving forward on an individual basis. If your life isn’t where you want it to be, don’t blame the economy, the president, or the weather. Keep your chin up, your dreams well in hand, and move forward. 🙂

  • Rick Sorrels says:

Although I agree a lot with what is being said, I have to look at the last 4 years of this guy who promised so much change for the better but it seems it went the other direction. Bigger deficit, and not because of inflation. This guy has signed more execitive orders than the last who knows-how-many presidents. Because of his out-of-control spending and his promise to bring the deficit down didn’t work, he is now asking for higher taxes as if we aren’t being taxed enough already. For now it is suppose to be taxes aimed at the rich, but it always seems to trickle down to the majority. His Obamacare is scary if you read it, and even if you elect not to take it you are going to be charged a penalty (tax). It is things like this that upsets me being sent to Viet Nam to fight in a war to protect our freedoms just to keep seeing them slowly being taken away with under-handed tactics. I. myself, think we are headed further downhill with Obama. My personal opinion and I’m sticking to it. I also have a question for James. How do you consider anything you get from the government a benefit? Whatever you get from them you have paid for many times over, weathewr from taxes, medicare or whatever. Speaking of paying for medicare, why do you pay it most, if not all your working years, but yet when you go on Social Security Retirement for your $1200 a month they want you to pay over $300.00 a month for medicare? That’s fair isn’t it, and a real benefit.

    • Pam says:

We have to remember that our political opinions are not facts. We each have a take on things and the way we think things should be. It doesn’t mean we are right. The purpose of government is to allow people to live in shared space with civility and dignity. A social system for our elderly is critical. Luckily we have a democratic process which lets the people voice their opinions and seek better solutions. For that we should be thankful.

  • jay says:

I like the mindset of those entrepreneurs in that room I would of reacted the same way both candidates had there ups and downs.

It was just about the lesser of two evils winning. Sounds like those entepreneurs would be successful regardless of who won the election.

we all decide our own fate not the elected president.

  • Mike says:

Like Jim Rohn used to say “If the other party came to power, what would that do for you? Not much”
We all make our own fortunes, all the outside stuff is just a distraction to be blamed for one’s own mistakes.

Anyway, how about sharing some of that info you were discussing in that room? 🙂

  • Patch says:

Thanks for this refreshing point of view, Chris. Unfortunately, most of what we hear/read about when it comes to politics stems from a victim mentality and that rhetoric makes doers apathetic toward the entire democratic process.

  • Quentin Pain says:

Walt, the simplest way to get in the room with Chris is to seek out and create your own mastermind group. It is one of Napoleon Hill’s 13 factors for success. Go get it mate 🙂

  • DJ Hopkins says:

Interesting perspectives…….you may well just write me off as some crazy conspiracy theorist but before you do…..and for what it’s worth I think you are right but not solely for the reason’s you mention. The real game is that it doesn’t matter which one wins because the concept of there actually being two opposing parties in politics is a complete illusion. If you know anything about persuasive marketing (and I’m sure you do) based on hypnotic tactics, especially those invented by Milton Erickson then you will understand that by getting people to focus on a choice between one or the other is a classic way to manipulate behind the scenes. In fact it does not matter which choice you make because it doesn’t count anyway because the real control is not with either choice but with both, meaning the puppet master controls both ( why do you think no other candidate can get a look in?). I do agree with the sentiment in this post that your business decisions should not be made based solely on this election result…go with your instincts and do it anyway…but don’t be surprised if the bigger picture comes in and changes the game at some point soon anyway……..There are just too many connecting dots for things to be the way they are by accident!

    • Dr. John says:

You are correct.. it doesn’t matter a bit who won the election.. nor are there two parties in this country. We are dealing with a controlling faction that Eisenhower warned us about when he left office when I was a kid. They are now in full force and have been running things for decades. In that regard Romney would have been just another groomed puppet for the Elite like Obama.. so it makes no difference who won.

This is about the overthrow of a country (ours).. and ultimately I think only expats or well fortified souls will survive the coming years unscathed. So stash your money overseas guys if you want to make it out the other end strong. And by the way.. I know a millionaire marketer who saw the writing on the wall and became an expat and I am planning to do the same myself.

For those naysayers out there, research it. I was one myself until I started digging ten years ago and was shocked at what I found. The CIA has a proven history of overthrowing democracies and installing US dictator puppets like Saddam Hussein for example. He was out of control and no longer wanted to play ball so he was taken out under the guise of terrorism.

Hitler also burned down the Reichstag and blamed it on the Polish (when they had nothing to do with it) so he could invade Poland. And the folks behind the scenes who run things here did the same thing. If you do you due diligence you’ll find as I did that the twin towers were brought down from within our own government so “we” could invade Afghanistan and Iraq and blame it on terrorism. The real problem we’re facing isn’t Muslim extremest factions or anything of the sort.. it’s the terrorists who run our own government.

Did you know for example that Cheyenne Mountain (which protects America’s airspace) was effectively told to stand down on 9/11? Or that some companies who had offices in the Twin Towers were told to tell their employees to stay home on that day? Or that the only way those towers could have fallen at free fall speed in their own footprints were by internal demolition? Or that the U.S. Navy just “happened” to be doing missile exercises in the Potomac River that exact day.. and the evidence is overwhelming that it was a missile that hit the Pentagon and not a plane? The English just “happened” to do the same thing btw.. so called bomb exercises were happening on the very day of the London bombing. The list goes on and on and on.. but most Americans are too apathetic to bother asking the questions they need to be asking.

For more information about this do some Google and YouTube searches and read or watch “The End of America.. a Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot” or read “Give Me Liberty” by Naomi Wolf, or “Shock Doctrine” by Naomi Watts. Congressman Ron Paul by the way is well aware of what is going on and has tried hard to stop it, but he doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance when the media is controlled and his message can only get out through grassroots efforts.. which means folks that it’s entirely up to us.

  • Sean says:

I find it hard to believe that you people are so able to miss the bigger opportunity that this story highlights, what we all need to do with our on-line businesses and what politicians of all parties need to do is GET THE CATS INTERESTED, recent polling shows that 96.3% of all decisions made in a household are made by the pets. We need to increase the amount of mouse and string based information we have on our sites and this will mean we can sell more, I can feel an info product being born.

On a less serious note the points made in the article and in the comments section are spot on, people who have built and run successful businesses both on-line and off line realize that it is the decisions and action that they take that makes the difference to their success.

Government and politicians will always change things that affect business but the way business is run and the direction it takes is in the hands of those that inspire those who work for and with that company, the ethos and beliefs of the company the attitude towards customers and suppliers does not change because a politician introduces a bill that affects that company, after all it is the same for each of their competitors.

Self reliance, action taken based on accurate information and keeping true to the core values that got you success in the first place are how you remain successful.

    And aggressively marketing to CATS.

    • admin says:

      Spot on Sean 🙂

  • Raymond says:

In the U.S. for at least the past 50 years, regardless of which party is in power the results are the same. More government; less individual freedom to choose how you live your life. From the level of taxation to what is defined as a medication ( for more taxation and to benefit drug companies in favor with the current government), who’s in charge matters.

While your group may be essentially immune from the effects of government due to your personal wealth and resulting mobility, the great majority of regular people aren’t. I think it’s a bit cavalier to simply blow off the effects on the general public and society.

The U.S. Constitution was a document that reflected a mindset and created a government unlike any other in history. The forces wishing to destroy that vision and replace it with an all powerful government are a threat to you and me equally.

Obama promised he would put coal mining and the use of coal out of business. He has nearly fulfilled that promise with the loss of thousands of jobs.

Will your sense of security be the same when government exercises control over what activities are allowed on the internet, a control they already have available to them, and decides that your business model is a) illegal or b) will be taxed at a business killing level.

Just my thoughts on how what government does and can do in the future. It does matter who’s running the government.

    • admin says:

The government enforces many things on the world which sicken me, and make my life harder. It could paralyze me if I allowed it too. At the same time the work of certain people in government, certain programs, certain laws etc. that make my life easier.

But I don’t care either way – I only have a limited ability to change any of that – where I can I will, but ultimately my best weapon is to take control of my own direction.

I used to live off unemployment benefits and grew my business from nothing. Now I have the ability to inspire and effect thousands of people, and no amount of complaining about things outside of control would have made that happen.

Business owners have huge risks faced from governments that have the power to completely destroy us should we make a bad decision. I am far from immune, and laws which pass have huge implications for me. I’ve invested a huge amount of time understanding economics, laws, politics and how they effect me, so that I can form and implement a better plan.

I educate myself, do what I can with the resources I have (which are tiny in comparison to the size of the battle, but every little helps) and ultimately focus on the things I do have control over. So when a president is voted in, I have no emotional reaction because it is already history, and I am busy with my own plan which will push forward regardless of who is in power, and what laws are passed.

Things will be enforced by others in power that may hurt me, and I have two choices…

      1. Be concerned with something which I don’t have the power to change.
      2. Focus on what I can change, work around it, and ultimately increase my ability to effect others and things happening in the bigger picture.

      I choose #2.

    • Pam says:

Raymond, this is just more of the blame game. No matter who is at the top, there are two other governing bodies and a court system that determine how things fall out. As a woman, I was very unhappy with the other candidate’s desire to control women’s issues. As an entrepreneur, I will keep speaking to issues that affect my business, but ultimately, my success falls on me, not the government. As an American, I want to remain sane and humane. It’s not always easy to maintain the inner focus to bring our talent to the table each day. But that is where the opportunity lies.

  • Des Vadgama says:

    Well said, Chris.

Every 7- or 8-figure entrepreneur or marketer I’ve met stays focused on taking continued action on their own business, and are mostly detached (emotionally) from the media, politics, economic climate, etc.

  • Sandra says:

    You bet…right there with them!

  • Bill Taylor says:

    Hi Chris:
Thanks for this I agree with the room majority.
When I was about 25 years old (a long time ago) I worked out that I could absolutely not rely on the government for any help. I also determined that my best plan was to basically stay out of their way and try and make sure they stayed out of mine.
That philosophy or mindset has stood me in good stead ever since.
Having said all that if I was an American instead of a Canadian (ex Brit) I would have voted for Obama, Mitt changes his positions too much for my liking and therefore I don’t trust him.
    Best,
    Bill

As a former judge and attorney, and now successful internet marketer and social media consultant, I spent literally hundreds of hours researching the political candidates and developing a social media campaign, specifically to reach the Miliennials, a group dear to my heart as I have been a single mother of four for several years.

After all that intense effort, where was I on election day? In a 3rd world country, walking the beach, celebrating the reality that during a time of chaos and negativity, through the power of the internet, I was able, in that moment, to relax & know that my business profits were increasing 10x, while I was relaxing in paradise, no matter who won the election. I posted my thoughts to my blog from my cellphone on election day.

What an amazing world we live in, to give “everyman” & woman, the ability to run a global business from their pocket phone. A big thanks to you, Chris, and others like Peter Garety, who have provided mentoring and software genius to help us technophobes make it happen anyway!

    • Ed says:

      Totally agree 😉

  • Dan Whitaker says:

Simply put and to the point Chris! The only way we can influence this world is through wealth. So lets keep our minds on the money.

  • Walter says:

Chris, no offense meant but your Obama subject line is totally out of place. I consider this a bad example for trying to catch attention.

    • As an American, I am not at all happy with the outcome of the election. I am definitely NOT a Democrat, and absolutely NEVER a Republican, so the choices between two liars, Obama, who has already wrecked the nation, and the misogynistic, elitist, living in the last century, Romney, sucked. I found myself without any choice but to write in a third party candidate who had answers to our national chaos, but was shut out of all debates.

I find it is totally necessary for my mental health to ignore the witch hunters, doomsayers full of hyperbole, hysteria, and nonsense. Those that worship at the temple of politics fail to realize the Machiavellan “divide and conquer” mentality that has ruled our nation for decades. The herd mentality of “denial” is one of the primary reasons America is in the toilet. As one writer on Huff post stated: This nation is becoming increasingly psychopathic”. I agree. Take a look at the temples of worship that consume so many: Pornography, Gluttony, Celebrities, Violent computer games, TV shows, films that scream this mindset to the world. Every day I receive at least 70 or more emails advertising pornography and sexual aids for desperate men whose sole focus is upon their external plumbing.

I agree with a number of others who have posted here that the only way to keep clear of the toxic political and social environment is to focus upon the positive things each one can do. Family, friends, charity, social involvement. Those build the lasting kind of “backlinks” as a metaphor, that foster success.

IMO, it is up to each of us, individually, to master fear, conquer the toxins of doomsayers and press on. What other choice is there? Suicide over such a base concern as money?

Focus upon what is real vs delusional and success follows. The Universe wants to reward us. Our task is to learn how to ask and to receive without resorting to fear and negativity which perpetuates a “freak out” storm.

Here is a helpful mantra that I use, source unknown: “What the mind can conceive and perceive, it can achieve”. Think Positive and never lose that mind set. Watch what unfolds.

  • If you have an strong online business elections won’t worry you like it seems to worry the masses.

When I started marketing online Clinton was the president and the Bush/Gore election was scaling up. Even with all the headaches that shortly followed my online businesses thrived by growing exponentially.

None of the elections or their outcomes have affected my online businesses negatively.

Just like you said, we ultimately have no control over who wins elections other than our vote. To be so frustrated and agitated because we didn’t pick the winning ticket is pointless.

You have to believe in order to achieve. Believe in yourself and work hard towards your goals and you will be able to thrive no matter what our political climate is.

  • Darcy says:

There is always worse news out there. My beloved daughter died in a motorcycle accident two years ago. As I lived through my worst nightmare I learned first hand – it’s not the events in your life that define you – it’s the attitude you bring to those events. Everything can makes us stronger, wiser, and more capable, or destroy us. I feel invincible now – no news can take me down. When you are supported by your inner strength rather than external events always having to “go your way” then you can live your life with confidence rather than as a victim of circumstances.

    • Ed says:

Bless you Darcy. That is the best thing I’ve read for a long time

      Thank you

    • Jan says:

Thank you, Darcy, for your comment. Our beloved daughter was killed 6/26/2010, and although the whole in our hearts will never heal, we now live – and work – only in ways that will make Rachel proud of us and honor her life. That alone is my motivation….not wealth, but goodness, and knowing that more financial success gives us more opportunities to provide goodness in the world.

  • Lary says:

When I was younger and was coaching, one of the topics that I taught was this:

This is how the game is played. You will find that there are 3 teams on the field. Our team, the opponents, and the officials. We know how to play our game when it is just our team and the other team on the field. But what we have to consider in order to win, is what the “Officials” team is doing also. They are the ones that dictate which rules that we play under and ultimatly determine how we must play the game. We will alter our game plan if necessary to accomodate their rules in order to win. Be aware, be adaptable, be strong, play hard. Walk off the field knowing that you gave it your all! Leave no regrets!

  • People get the gov they vote for and since a lot did not care then they can’t complain about the outcome.
I agree though if it is to be it is up to me and the USD$ went down after the election – the market did not like it at all. Now if all that money spent on campaigning for the White House was used to help people instead of turning us all off elections and general disdain for the failed political process the world would be a better place for it.

  • Wilton White says:

    I agree with you 100%, Chris! 🙂

My most recent article was about this very topic in response to the continued emotional reactions that I saw on my Facebook wall. One of the things I mentioned was that no president will magically make you richer or poorer or find a job for you by virtue of their election into office; it is each person’s individual responsibility to tend to their financial affairs…or not.

Unfortunately, much of what I wrote in my article and shared in Facebook comments on this subject fell on deaf ears. I got the impression that some people wanted to hang on to the notion that one person of any political party was going to save them. However, no one can save you from yourself! It all boils down to you taking action to move forward.

    Successful entrepreneurs understand this well.

  • Mike Stewart says:

I was at first disappointed about the results of the election. But then I reminded myself that it is my actions that I take every day that will determine my future no matter who is elected President, or Senator or congressman. It is my responsibility to help the people in my circle of influence to be responsible for their actions and stopped blaming their situation on someone else. I am continue using as usual to daily reach for my goals and dreams.

  • Kyle says:

No matter what we still need to make money and put food on the table.

But what if the president gets his way and regulates the Internet to favor big corporations to make it more like cable TV making it impossible for the small guy to succeed, or makes people use ID cards to access the Internet or taxes everyone’s websites big or small, or just shuts it down completely, if any of this happens we are all going to really feel it.

So are you saying who cares, do not vote, do not care about bills that pass the destroy our freedoms and country or regulate the internet for the worse, just sit back and do not worry, just keep working in the worst economy we have seen and is only getting worse. Sit back and let them take our freedoms and rights away one by one until there is nothing left. With this attitude we will have nothing including a free internet sooner than you think.

This really shows why the country and world is in so much trouble and is only getting worse, because people do not care and think they have no control and just sit back and let it happen.

What happened to fighting for our freedoms and rights for a better country, world for now and the future??

I care and vote – but beyond that I focus on what I can control, I work on increasing my own influence and ability to cause change, not on things that I realistically have little control over.

Nelson Mandela did not spend his time complaining about the actions of others while in prison. He worked on the only thing he could. Developing his mind and educating himself to further understand the situation and develop a plan of action which he implemented.

If you think my message is not care and don’t vote, then you have missed the point entirely.

  • Mark Raphael says:

I agree with you Chris. It is unfortunate that many people are so driven by fear. They look for reasons why they could fail, then over analyze things, freeze and do nothing. I had conversations with people before the election that were putting off simple spending decisions until they saw the outcome of the election. I found that very sad. The outcome of the election shouldn’t have any real influence. It’s just not relevant. This level of fear comes from inside of a person and can only be worked out from inside of a person. Unfortunately it seems to be very wide spread. People need to learn to move forward without having all of the answers and being in total control of everything. Act in spite of fear.

  • Jan says:

I don’t believe we can stick our heads in the sand and ignore what is going on around us. Yes, it’s easy to say “it’s just not relevant,” but it is relevant to our futures personally and professionally.

What Is now happening in the U.S. was predicted 180 years ago by Alexis de Toqueville:“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.”

No matter how much money we make, I want my children and 8 little grandchildren to grow up in the Land of the Free. Money doesn’t buy everything and there are some things more important than money.

I am not saying to stick your head in the sand, but focus on what you can control. I work on increasing your own influence and ability to cause change, not on things that you realistically have little control over.

The world will always change in ways you do not like, and you can’t fight every battle. If you want the best for you and your family you have to focus on what you can truly influence, and what you truly have control over. Not to let stress enter your life from things outside your control. Anything that you can’t control on your current path (there’s only so many hours in the day) you should let go.

Nelson Mandela did not spend his time complaining about the actions of others while in prison. He worked on the only thing he could. Developing his mind and educating himself to further understand the situation and develop a plan of action which he implemented.

If you think my message is to stick your head in the sand, then you have missed the point entirely. I am saying you can do more to change the situation (and the situation of your family) by focusing on what you can directly impact, not the actions of people you ultimately have no control over.

  • Gary wilson says:

I have to say that in a way we can control the out come of the election but even though most of it is out of our control it will hurt online to a point cause with Obama back in he want to control everything and say you didn’t build it. Each one of you know that you started out with nothing and turn it into something big for you. This Country is in big trouble even more now than ever.

I will agree with ya that if you keep pushing forward then you shouldn’t have to worry about to much but if he does what he wants then he will control the internet and shut down all small business. Then one thing we all must do is stick together even if you don’t want certain people in.

I don’t know if you were for Obama or not but it will not help us out at all but do know that he will make sure that we are taxed very high. I know a business that has been here for many many years and now they had to shut down because there taxes went up so high that they couldn’t afford to keep paying high taxes. I guess we all shall see. Hopefully we can keep doing business online and still make it.

This just doesn’t effect us but our Children who will pay for all this and they shouldn’t have to. We do need money to make it but it’s not everything. what we really need to do is put God back in everything and ask him for help. The way it looks is that with Obama back in he wants to be a dictatorship which we don’t need that at all.

  • pamela says:

No president, prime minister, mayor, or any other government official can control your business or source of income. Many people think their income will get better because of who is in office but it wont. Chris, your story inspires me to continue working online even through the tough times, thanks.

    Hi Chris,

Good article, and reading the comments it seems you’ve achieved the aim of getting more traffic to your site through discussion of a hot topic.

Being outside the US I’m glad that Obama won as he gives the world the best chance of avoiding conflict, starting a war to create jobs like Bush Snr & Jnr is not good foreign policy – with someone who is not trigger happy the enemy doesn’t attack to begin with.

If you work hard and run a legitimate business in a growing market industry you stand a good chance of success.

If you work for a company in an industry dependant on support from government perhaps the outcome does effect you, but being a victim and blaming the system won’t help you.

Where possible be your own person and think like a business owner rather than an employee.

    Andrew

  • I voted third party. Again … I was not convinced that Romney was any better than Obama. They all seem to do the bidding of the mega-banks and other corporations. What’s the definition of fascism?

I look at Obama’s policies and they seem so familiar. Almost like Bush the younger was still in the White House. Then I look at Bush the younger’s policies and they are a continuation of Clinton’s.

It’s been a very slippery slope since they shot JFK.

If you liked the last 4 years, you should love the next 4. If you didn’t like the last 4 years, then I’d suggest that you duck and cover!

    Good luck everyone!

  • George says:

Why do we all think so much of the power of the president? It’s the Multi-National Corporations and the Billionaires that own them that are running the show now… We need to forget Federal politics and start forming a local communities that SHOP LOCAL and keep our shopping dollars circulating within our own communities… Only by supporting our own local businesses (that are the real job creators) will we get out of this recession – and show the multi-nationals that they better stop wasting so much money on transportation through hostile waters (which forces our military to spend billions keeping their routs safe) – and bring it all back closer to where the people are – so they can actually earn enough money to buy their stuff!

Let’s all SHOP LOCAL and show them that we don’t need them!

  • Carl says:

Hmm. So this article really said nothing. And, at the same time, was a pretty brutal headline that DEMANDED I read it.

Feels crappy to be tricked, Chris. I was expecting a fact-free right wing idiot fest. Instead, I got reality.

    Nice work.

  • Logan Badger says:

I agree totally, I am not sure what to expect in the next 4 years. when Obama made the statement “If You Have A Business You Did Not Create It Someone Else Did”…I completely lost what respect I had for him and I think we would have been better off with Romney…at least we would have had someone with good business savvy and knows how to actually create jobs.

I do not know if it is going to make any difference who is in office if the two parties do not work together
but we will find out soon enough.

In my opinion, we just need to make our own way in business, as the government will probably make it harder for us now. In the next few months we could be looking at paying a lot more yearly taxes so we just need to work that much harder to make our business grow.

  • At first I was devastated by the outcome of the election, because I have for some time seen the prevailing attitude in my country swing more and more in the direction of socialism. Too many people walk around these days with the attitude of “Gimme what’s owed to me”. Unbridled government debt does reach a point where it is not sustainable. I believe some European countries have reached that point.
HOWEVER, there were some great entrepreneurs who started and grew companies in the midst of the Great Depression, and there will always be opportunities if you look for them. If you are in the IM niche, bad economic times will cause many more people to look for ways to make money, bringing an influx of new customers.
I get the point of your post perfectly: You control your own financial future, and it’s time to realize that the election is over, and it’s now time to get off of your duff and “Make hay while the sun shines”.

    • admin says:

Yes economic turbulence creates opportunity for a shift of power and wealth.

  • Steve says:

Our leader or commander in chief could not find his butt in the dark if he had his hands on it. He has no business experience, only 15% of his selected people in his cabinet have business experience and they are telling us how to run a business… Give me a break. This was the biggest mistake people have made in a long time reelecting this man. I ask the question, what good has he done for you or this country over the last 4 years? Tell me… Nothing is the right answer. I am not saying that the other candidate is any better but I know what I got from this one and will put someone new in there to try, and if they don’t do any good I will vote them out next time and put someone else in there that does some good. I don’t stand on one side of the line or the other, I vote them out if they are worthless, which is what I tried to do this time. He is a smooth talker and we will not know the face of this country after this 4 year term, which is sad, I love my country and have served in the armed forces for it and proud to do so. But this was a huge mistake…
Taxes are going to go thru the roof, unemployment will rise, inflation is going to go way higher and so much more. So as you can see my answer is no, this man will not help business, mine or any other in this great country of the USA… Proud to be an American, but disappointed and ashamed. Thanks Steve

  • Penny says:

Hi Chris: What a great post and message. We are responsible for our actions, no matter what occurs around us. Of course, that’s not to say circumstances can’t help or hurt. Ultimately, I want to remain accountable for my own actions and thoughts.

  • Mark says:

After reading through the comments on this post I guess I should not be surprised but I still am. That so many people still have yet to realize that this election was not just about the changing of the guard or basically what party was going to be in control and whether or not their policies are going to affect my business. This election was about our country, for those of you who are Americans and live in the U.S. It was all about whether we wanted to see America survive and continue to be the America created by our founding fathers. Or whether we wanted to see America parish and become just another government dominated socialist nation.

If you have taken any time over the past four years to look into who BO really is and what his goals in life are you would have a fair insight into his master plan for America. No need to believe me just read his own words going back to his days as a community organizer till present. A lot of which has to do with fulfilling his father’s dreams and wishes.

If you’re not one of his groupies and think his first four years were bad just wait and see what he does over the next four now that he has no restraints and nothing to fear. Just as he told President Medvedev of Russia – “I’ll have a lot more flexibility once I’m reelected.” Well folks fasten your seat belts because it’s going to be a rough ride. One that America as you’ve known it may not survive.

Like the rest of you, I’m a business person and as such one of my main goals is to make money. I would like nothing more than to make lots and lots of money and become a highly successful and rich businessman. After all isn’t that one of the main reasons people immigrate to American – the land of opportunity? Plus our freedoms, rights and privileges granted to us through our Constitution thanks to our founding fathers.

Yet I see comments here scoffing at Mitt Romney and even calling him a “misogynistic, elitist, living in the last century.” Unbelievable! Romney has achieved more than most of us could ever hope to achieve in life. Yet he is branded as a rich elitist simply because he did what most people only dream of. You should be ashamed to call yourself American. I find it unbelievable that the people of this country would elect a man who has never run a business, never served a day in the military, probably doesn’t have a clue what a budget is, who’s highest position in life is that of a community organizer, yet do nothing but disparage a man like Romney whose credentials make BO look like a bench warming little leaguer. What a blind and stupid nation we have become.

So while BO and the media, who by the way can’t kiss BO’s butt enough, were successful in convincing all of America’s sheep that this election was about the economy, jobs, national debt, health care, etc. And that BO was the man for the job despite the fact he has been an absolute failure since taking office. It’s was really about deception and bringing America to its knees. So as we use to say back when I was a youngster “you just keep on keepin on.” Livin in a dream world and thinking there is nothing big brother can do to affect your business to the point of failure. And in four years from now after BO has run his plan of destruction on America get back to me and tell me how you’re doing. And how happy you are that you put this AH back in office.

    Have a good life.

    • robert says:

I think you stated it pretty well. Even I am shocked that the majority in the U.S. have devolved into clueless, apathetic victims, who can’t see beyond the next freebie. And, I have always been a cynical type.

  • Jim Intihar says:

    Munch,

I disagree. Obama is anti-business and anti-self reliance. I can tell you running a traditional brick and mortar business for 14 years with W-2 employees, medical benefits, paid leave etc that I’m constantly under pressure from the policies of the Obama administration. One example is that I received a notice from my payroll processing company that the state where my company is located would be taking additional payroll taxes to cover a shortage in the state’s unemployment fund. When the government continues to extend unemployment, now to 99 weeks, we are creating a society of people that are more and more dependent on the government to survive. Because the government is insolvent they simply tax the small business owners more. The failed policies of the Obama Administration, 7.9% unemployment, 25 million people chronically unemployed, no new net jobs added since Obama took power 4 years ago, $16 trillion deficit and 4 quarters in a row of shrinking national GDP, makes it very difficult as a business person to make investments when the path of the nation is so unclear.

Now if you work out of your house, don’t pay any employees and use VAs from overseas at $3 an hour, maybe you have a more rosy view of the future than I do.

    Regards,

    Jim

    • admin says:

You disagree that you should take action on what you have control over, instead of obsessing over the things you cannot control? That is my point. My point is not that Obama is a good or bad president, or will do things that will make your business worse/better.

My point is that the bigger picture is out of your control.

Face the reality of the situation and act accordingly. Don’t stress over what has happened, and the things which will happen that you cannot stop.

Turn off the news that feeds you controversy, anger and mis-information, and focus on growing your knowledge, and implement a strategic plan.

  • Justin Young says:

Depending on what type of internet business you are in, maybe I am wrong but I would suspect there will be little to no change necessary in your business strategy.

It amazes me (and I’m not referring to any commenters here BTW) that people continue complain and whine about this election. Is BO the best person to be leading this country? In my view, probably not but its over and done. Yes, we do have the freedom of speech but our president, whether you voted for him or not still deserves a fair amount of respect. All we can do is hope and pray that he will lead our country down the right path.

As for your online business, keep working on completing your goals and make slight adjustments where necessary. Don’t let this election keep you from moving forward.

  • peter davies says:

I agree with most here. It doesn’t make that much difference who the president/prime minister of a country is. In internet business you simply base your business somewhere else if business ed tape becomes too unfriendly.

My views have always been libertarian so I don’t like socialism by nature – to me the state is there to create a well regulated business friendly environment without too much tax or red tape, but despite this ultimately you have to learn to work in the environment and look at what you are doing rather than govt.

The message it is down to you to make the right calls will always be the same

Obama is a Socialist who belives in redistribution of wealth and is anti business and pro welfare.
You better be conserned, this President is the wordst thing that could happen for buisness people.
More and more companies will be leaving the USA and Obama will be creating a welfare state.
It will take years to undo the damage if possible.
Say goodbye to your Business’s the way youi know them.
If your not taking this seriously your making a big mistake.

  • Hayden says:

Agree. We are on track to beat the best year ever (37 year old company), and bet the best year by almost 15%. Taxes increased, state fees increased, health care costs increased. Frankly, the entire system in California was against us, and we still grew.
We used many of the basic principles that we all know and love, and we will reach over $7 mill.

For us, the best Government is a small one, or the least intrusive. But, if you know the ground rules, and are willing to work hard, it can be done.

Thanks Chris for the great insight and tremendous value you provide.
    All the best,

You are so right, we can control anything other than ourselves.

It didn’t affect me either way because I’m relying on my self to change circumstances.

    Great read Munch,

Obama’s reelection may have something to do with associating himself with the discovery of 100 years of natural gas. Not that I’m too bothered who won.

It seems likely that the politics and economy of one country, even the US, will not have a detrimental effect on our online businesses. Even a failing recession will probably result in an increase in people looking to make money online.

    Thanks for your post 🙂
